SAVE OUR AIRPORT

On April 22nd 2004 ‘SAVE OUR AIRPORT’ banners carried by protesters marched up the Main Street of Proserpine to show their support and unity for the Whitsunday Shire Council to retain control of the Proserpine Airport.

Some of the 1250 protesters that marched through the streets of Airlie Beach protesting the sale of the Whitsunday Coast (Proserpine) Airport. After a Supreme Court Hearing on April 2 2007, Justice Muir handed down his decision on Thursday April 12th 2007. His decision was, as follows: • That any agreement constituted by a document executed as a Deed by the Applicant and the Respondent on 21 February 2001 and a letter from Messers S R Wallace and Wallace to the applicant dated 27 April 2001 is unenforceable by either Respondent against the applicant; • The first Respondent’s counter claim be dismissed; • The first Respondent pay the applicant’s costs of and incidental to the proceedings including reserved costs, if any, to be assessed on the standard basis.

We wish to thank all the supporters of the Save Our Airport campaign especially the media. No matter how good a protest we make or how well we campaign for or against something, without the event or the issue being reported and exposed, the messages we try to send would go nowhere. With regards the Save Our Airport campaign, our local media (Times and Guardian) need to be congratulated and thanked for their perseverance, continual exposure and balanced reporting of the Airport's many complex issues. Our media have done as much if not more to help Save Our Airport than anyone one else and I have no doubt that their regular reporting of the Airport saga over the past few years has made a considerable contribution to this win for the community and this region.

ALMOST every business, every orginisation and every resident of the Whitsunday's (with the exception of the WDC) have supported the Save Our Airport campaign. This supporty has been overwhelming to say the least. I am confident that the community's united stand to Save Our Airport will send a very clear message to the State Government and will go a long way to convincing them that the Proserpine Airport must be retained as the Gateway to the Whitsundays and must remain where it is, in it's present location at Proserpine. .

RESPONSES

We had a reply from Whitsunday Development Corporation (WDC) this is what they said..

Our position on this issue has always been the same. At present there are legal proceedings between the Whitsunday Shire Council and Laguna Quays and the WDC is not going to comment until this has been resolved.

Ed. IT'S PROBABLY A GOOD THING WE AREN"T ALL WAITING FOR A COURT CASE !" .....WDC STAFF DID NOT ATTEND OUR PUBLIC MEETING and did not support our Save Our Airport campaign. It should be noted that the Whitsunday Development Corporation received $50,000 from the Airport finances.
